Archaeological precinct of the Lower City

It is bounded by the fortification wall of the end of the 4th century BC. which runs all the way around it and most of it is visible at various heights. Its floor plan was studied and recorded by many foreign archaeologists of the last century, the last ones being Michaud and Blecon. It occupies an area (together with the Acropolis), about 150 acres. The entire area inside and outside the walls, during the first post-revolutionary years, was occupied by the rural inhabitants, cleared of the remaining ancient buildings and turned into irrigated fields. Today the fields are mostly abandoned and only the ancient foundations on their borders survive.
